The Perkins Loan Service Center is a sub-division of the Student Accounts Office. This area is responsible for the accounting, billing, and collection of the Federal Perkins Loan Fund and the Student Emergency Loan Fund.
Our office may be contacted at 828-262-3097 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
You may defer (delay) payments on your loan by submitting forms completed and certified for any one of the following categories:
Deferments are not granted in advance. Postponements are granted to loan recipients who file a request form. Download a Deferrment form (pdf file).
The Federal Perkins Loan Program provides for partial cancellation of loans to borrowers if you are a full time law enforcement officer or corrections officer for a local, state, or federal agency.

Hardship deferments may be requested by the borrower at six month intervals upon proper completion of a Hardship form. The Perkins Loan Service Center will review each request on an individual basis and make a determination at that time. Hardships are normally granted with the deferment of principal only. Interest payments would continue to be due on a regular monthly basis. You will be notified through the billing system if the hardship was granted or you may contact the Service Center at 828-262-3097.

Appalachian State University offers a short term loan known as an Emergency Loan through the Student Development Office located on the first floor of the Dougherty Administration Building. A student may apply Monday - Thursday, 2:00PM - 3:30PM in person - NO TELEPHONE CALLS. Loans may not be applied for during break periods or prior to the first day of classes of each semester.
